Malek Bennabi and the Task of Islamization of Knowledge

Meinhaj Hussain

This paper contextualizes the work of Malek Bennabi to the Islamization of Knowledge (IOK) debate, with specific emphasis to consider what the task of IOK should be. IOK is an Islamic educational and intellectual movement seeking to solve the Muslim world’s problems and perceived backwardness through reordering and rejuvenating Muslim education and knowledge. We consider Bennabi’s direct guidelines for education and knowledge within that backdrop. This includes a consideration of civilizational, theological, cultural aspects, as well as questions of how to borrow from the West, what to, and what not to borrow, as well as various internal aspects of reform to be considered. While Malek Bennabi predates the IOK movement, Bennabi’s relevance to IOK is highlighted and his work considered in light of the task of the IOK movement.
